Cost: Asphalt Wins Upfront
If upfront price is your main concern, asphalt usually costs less to install. But the story doesn't end there. Asphalt needs sealcoating every few years and tends to need repairs sooner. Concrete costs more to pour but lasts longer and needs less frequent upkeep. Over the full life of the driveway, the gap narrows. If you plan to stay in the home a while, concrete's longer lifespan can make it the better value. If you want to spend less now, asphalt makes sense.
Durability and New Jersey Winters
Both materials deal with freeze-thaw differently. Concrete is rigid and very durable, often lasting 25 to 30 years or more — its weak spot is de-icing salt, which can pit the surface if it isn't sealed. Asphalt is more flexible, so it handles ground movement and frost heave without cracking as easily, and shrugs off salt better. But asphalt softens in summer heat and gets brittle in deep cold. Good base prep matters more than the material you pick.
Maintenance: What You're Signing Up For
Every driveway needs some care, but the amount differs. Asphalt asks for more attention — sealcoat every three to five years, and fill cracks and potholes as they appear. Concrete is lower maintenance: seal every couple of years to protect against salt and water. Concrete stains can be tougher to remove, though, and repairs are more noticeable when they happen. Looks matter, especially if you might sell someday. Concrete offers more design options — you can stamp it, color it, or add a decorative finish for a custom look. Asphalt gives you one look: classic black. It's clean and traditional, and a fresh sealcoat keeps it sharp. Neither is wrong — it comes down to the style you want. For resale, a well-kept driveway of either type helps; a cracked, patched one hurts no matter the material.
